But I do not know how to get going on the internet. Help, anyone? I can pay a poor student or other kind of kind person roughly £20 for a teaching session, Q and A mostly, and it would be great if you'd answer questions or help me fix bugs in the future. Any takers? I need you now!

Or maybe, you can configure the one I've got, as there are complex instructions, or complex to me; you have to know code or what to do with the code supplied. Can you help with this?

Hi Antoinette,

Wifi (802.11a/b/g) can be a bit of a sticky point under linux although
most cards are compatible, one way or another. I (or anyone else here, I
suspect :p) would be happy to help you out with it - but you can keep
your money (or at least, I won't take it :p). Work pays me enough for
supporting linux as it is! ;). £20 will buy you a nice Atheros miniPCI
or PCMCIA (not USB! USB and Atheros cards don't work well together)
wireless card, if nothing else.

If you want I can give you a call, and/or pop round after aforementioned
work. Or if you want to start by email, making sure the card is plugged
in, then opening a terminal (Applications->Terminal in GNOME) and typing
the following two commands:

lspci <hit enter>
lsusb <hit enter>

Then copying & pasting the output to the list will go a long way to
working out whether you can use your current card or not :)

/Nick
