.bash_profile runs when a bash login shell is executed. .bashrc is run for
non-login bash shells. gnome-terminal should normally run .bashrc as it
isn't executing a login shell. (

gnome-terminal preferences and look at the contents of .bashrc and
.bash_profile to ensure that one is not sourcing the other.
