Hello Philip

I'm interested in knowing more about Linux, Raspberry Pi, automation etc but have drawn a blank on suitable evening classes or a local U3A group - Microsoft seems to have a monopoly!

Yours might be just the kind of group I need - when is your next meeting?

Kind regards

Philip Purkis

  Hello David

Your message was forwarded by U3A members in Burley. I'm interested knowing more about Linux, Raspberry Pi, automation etc but have drawn a blank on suitable evening classes.

I was a U3A member in Leeds but have moved to Knaresborough. Yours is just the kind of group I would like to join but I'd like something local. Do you know of any groups/classes near Knaresborough/Harrogate, or anyone I could contact?

  Kind regards

  Philip Purkis

David Whiteley is a new member who used to work in IT at a University. He will be pleased to lead a group of members that would like to understand how their computer really works - see his synopsis below. If you would like to express an interest in joining such a group please reply to this email.

  Real Computing
I am thinking about leading a group of people who want to learn more about computers.
Computers are tools. Most computing courses teach the use of computers as tools, how to use email, how to write documents, how to browse the web and so on. If this is all you want then you can probably ignore the rest of this message. However, if are you interested in what goes on inside the box then read on.

There's been some publicity recently about the need for children to be taught programming. I wonder if others might be interested in topics like:
" Understanding the microprocessor. What really goes on when it messes with your bits and bytes?
" Understanding networking. How does your computer talk to Google?
" What is the operating system? What does it do for you?

  Automating things.
How can you make your computer do what you want? Do you want to programme it, or to write scripts that use existing tools to do clever things for you? What are shell scripts?
  Economical computing.
Do you want to get and use professional quality software for free, without committing computer piracy.

I would be happy to construct a course to cover topics like these. I am now retired from a job where I worked inside computers. I spent my time designing systems, programming them and administering them. I also taught programming to engineering undergraduates.

I would hope that participants would bring their own computers. I will use Linux on mine, but the same software I use is freely available to run on Windows and, I believe, on the more recent Mac machines.
Are you interested? If so, please make contact by replying to this email telling me which of the above topics appeal to you. You are free to suggest other topics which I might cover if I am able. Help me to create a course that interests you and stretches me.

  David Whiteley
