I have the (good|mis) fortune of falling into both camps. I work directly in
computers, but they are also one of my main interests. Even my wife calls me
a geek!

I have a personal feeling of dislike to towards MS. A combination of things,
a combination of things, but basically I don't think they are the best, nor
should they rule the personal and enterprise computing worlds (and they are
different worlds), and for the people about to reply that they don't rule
the enterprise at the moment, that is the aim.

I like open source software (OSS), and although I use it almost exclusively
at home, I am also trying to introduce it into my work as well. I believe
there are great benefits to had from OSS in all environments, and it is my
intent to spread the use of such software as much as I am able.

I joined the LUG because I wanted to find like-minded people. I wanted to
encourage and be encouraged. I offered to help Mike (B) with the website
because of this, and also set-up the mailing list to encourage discussion.

At times I can act superior - I have been told I don't suffer fools lightly,
butthis comes from the fact that I am always willing to help people if they
are willing to help themselves, but I will not do peoples jobs for them.
People I have worked with will vouch for this... I am also the first to
admit when I don't know something, and will willing learn to overcome that
(Just ask Ian Linwood about the amount of times I have bothered him...). I
am not a subscriber to the RTFM attitude that proliferates through the linux
world, and believe that it is this attitude is largely responsible for
holding back the growth of linux amongst normal users.

As far as the meetings are concerned, I want to have my cake and eat it. I
want to learn and teach, but also discuss. The Gleaston locale lends itself
to a more structured environment which is why I suggested additional
informal meetings. As much as I want the LUG to develop, I am not willing to
make a 2 hour trek from home for a discussion/gossip/argument. That's what
mailing lists, IRC and Slashdot are for...

Not a very coherant mail I know, but it sort of gets my point across...
