No you don't.
At least you actively choose your content surfing the web. IRC is a
different story.

My real objection to IRC is that it is so vulnerable.
Because of its very nature, using an IRC client leaves your PC wide
open to attack/takeover.

Open IRC ports are also a common source of attack by script kiddies,
et al.
