Okay, I unfortunatly I'm going to have to agree with you,
most of the ms droids dont like linux, and having actually worked
in the same situation where linux was 'banned' and customer
advise to 'upgrade' to MS i know what your saying.

things you can do.

boot off a live disc..

and dd with netcat over the network to some device.

you can tar up your filesystem and put that somewhere safe.

I'd return it with windows vista on it, then try and
get it out of the warranty.

do you have the recovery discs, you should just be able to run
them and that should piece the system back together, and
delete or your data.

The guy at my 'local' repair center had said that if software was found to be the cause of the overheating problem (which it clearly isnt, as it runs much better under linux than vista!) then i would have to pay for their time. And if i get a brainwashed M$ geek looking at my laptop, he/she might just be pissy enough to blame linux for the problem.

So im playing it safe and not giving them any excuses!

As a side note, vista will be completely wiped from the machine upon return! *hurrrah!*

Hi Jen, Taken from their web site. Nowhere in the warranty does it state or mention MS os.

Limited Warranty on Data Storage Media
The warranty on data storage media products is limited. During a period of six months after the
purchase, Fujitsu Siemens Computers will replace any data carrier that turns out to be physically
defective upon delivery if it was supplied with the product by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Software
itself is not the object of the warranty.

Hi Jen, read a article in Linux Format (LFX100) p16 regarding Curry's misleading customers that only MS os can be used on the computers it sells. Otherwise warranty is void......this is total rubbish as the guy who sent in the letter said and i agree. He contacted Curry's customer services who told him that the staff at the shop must have been told by MS that only genuine MS os can be used on the computers!

Can you let me know the make of your laptop

Dave

Hai guys,

I thought i'd share with you my woes! my (relativley) new laptop has a hardware problem (covered by warranty - so they can deal with it) and I have to send it away! So not only do i have to be without a laptop for a while, I also have to uninstall any trace of its linux minty-ness, because installing an operating system is a 'Void of Warranty' !!

Sucks to be me!!
