Hate to say it, but I think you are stuffed.
I looked at these modems in PC World over Christmas -
and they are very probably what are known as 'winmodems'.
Winmodems are devices which rely on some software parts from
Windows to work :-(
That's done in order to make them cheap.


Jim Bailey recently had some progress with a winmodem -
care to comment Jim?

Best advice I would have is to (sadly) ditch it and get
a hardware modem. The group will give you advice on
what to buy here - even better go for an external 
serial port modem (that is what I had to do in the
end over Christmas). 
BTW, anyone had good success with USB modems on Linux?
