Linux, and OSS applications, are also good for rescuing modern hardware too.

For example, for one of my clients, installing a modest specification 
machine in front of a an Exchange server to filter out junk mail and 
viruses meant that they suddenly didn't need to spend an awful lot of 
money on a processor and memory upgrade.
