Members

I am the financial controller of CIDA Ltd based at the Media Centre in
Huddersfield and would like to ask the users group for help apropos
linux for use in business.

CIDA is the creative industries development agency and one of our many
roles is helping small and micro creative businesses expand and
strengthen to creating wealth, employement and success for our region.

One of the many problems facing small business's is undercapitalisation
which means strains on budgets and constant battles with cash flow. The
creative sector relies heavily on IT and the cost of setting up a
network can be prohibitive for small businesses faced with high
specification hardware to drive the never ending upward spiral of
software demands made by Microsoft. Add to that the expenses of untold
continuing license fees and it becomes a brake on the potential of our
creative entrepreneurs.

I have often thought that a linux based system could be the answer to
this escalating problem - but I come up against a brick wall when trying
to mount an arguement for going down the linux path. The IT industry is
so mortgaged to Microsoft that to suggest another way is blasphomy.

So ...... Is their anyone out there who can;

1 - deliver a presentation to a business audience with a cogent
arguement why it is desirable to go linux when their IT advises are
suggesting Microsoft Windows,
2 - provide the expertise to install a small network to provide all the
usual services using linux boxes or a mixture of linux and windows
boxes,
3 - provide support for sme's if and when IT problems occur,
4 - provide software support, eg ecommerce and database.

etc etc.

I think there is a great opportunity for the use of linux in this
industry sector and I would like help to explore the possibility.

I can be contacted at CIDA on 01484 483145 or kenn@cida.org

Many thanks for reading this email
