It wasnt; my mobo that was at fault, btu an incorrectly terminated scsi
bus which had been like this for over 2 years!

I solved it by moving all my SCSi II devices to a separate SCSI host
adaptor, and moving the position of the active terminator on my SCSI U2W
bus!
