Hi Mat!
The answer to your question is "yes" I do know about Linux 
screenreaders. in fact I am supposed to be doing a talk for the Birstall 
group about Linux accessability.
I happen to be using one of them with Ubuntu on a laptop which is Orca 
which seems to have replaced Gnopernicus.
