[Hudlug] some progress with w3m but can't connect

Using the w3m-img to connect to either www.google.com or www.btinternet.com I 
occasionally (2 out of every 5 attempts) get the opening socket on the 
console for a short while (three or four seconds), before it loads in the 
page and images.
Other sites that have graphics appear to be similar.
A very old page that is text only, works fast and I cannot get the open 
sockets error to appear is

w3m www.bradfordcollege.ac.uk/textonly/default.htm

Does that give a connection?
