Thanks Anne. Some good suggestions - and I agree about the need to face the realities of cross platform working and multi platform collaboration.
For instance, at work I'm forced to use XP & W7 machines - but I've gradually been able to install the Windows versions of a few useful Free Software applications that run natively on Linux (eg. Inkscape, Focuswriter). Linux, however, is making some inroads on specialist number-crunching machines - for tasks which, over a decade ago, would have naturally been run on expensive unix workstations.
Talks/demos would be good - as long as we could ensure a continued supply of people willing to give them ;-) It requires a bit of forward planning - but is do-able, I think (eg. maybe by cooperating with other groups & organisations that are within an evening's travelling distance).
As for venues, I'm still feeling my way around Huddersfield - so am open to suggestions (I've worked in the area for 14 years - but until this year I was a cross-pennine commuter). Ideally we'd want to have a free evening venue - as we wouldn't want to have to impose room hire fees on a group that might be very small to start with. And yes, wifi & quietness are a couple of essentials. I'll put out a few feelers...

What I would enjoy is for one (or two) member(s) to talk and demonstrate
for, say 30-45 minutes, about an application that he/she particularly
likes using. Follow that with social, help-each-other-chat or
whatever :-)
The venue is important, too. It needs to be somewhere with wifi, but
also somewhere not too noisy (so that you can hear what's being said).
I didn't like the compartmental setup in the last venue, as it made
it too difficult to chat with people.
I totally agree about not wasting time on negatives, but I'd suggest
that we widen our outlook slightly. I have in mind the fact that many
people need to react with Windows users, and cross-platform working
could be usefully explored too.
