ta - sorted now. The Pulseaudio thing was the steer i needed - i found a 
useful little GUI tool at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=759147
just in case anyone else might find it useful. Now fully supplied with 
Traditional Song, and the commentary on the Manchester derby, in rather 
excitable Italian in this instance.
