Hi all,

I saw this press release and got excited:

http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2011/09/ofcom-progresses-with-new-wireless-technology/

Ofcom will be opening up TV frequencies (apparently between 470 and
790MHz) for license-free, opportunistic radio usage. Where there's no
TV signal, you'd be free to use the frequency. One of the reasons
2.4GHz was given away for Wi-Fi is that water is opaque at this
frequency. Having 470-790MHz will mean license free transmission over
much larger distances and with much higher quality connections, for
example city wide. The only drawback is that to participate, you need
to consult a geolocation database of spectrum use (which will be tied to
the existing Internet).

Still, city-wide wireless would be very useful. Anyone want to put
together a new Net? :-)
