Turns out that after all of the apt-getting and whatnot it did a
kernel upgrade (which I had noticed) however as was very evident Lilo
b0rked. Had I thought about simply running  'lilo' before rebooting I
would have had zero issues.

Seems odd that this didn't get run for me. I'm sure it was probably
mentioned on-screen but so much stuff happened during the apt-get
dist-upgade that I obviously missed it.
