Richard, thanks that worked.

Next question .... what's the command to list the directory contents aka dir
in DOS?

Phil, you suggested that TAB from the command line will list all available
commands - it doesn't.  It appears to be sensitive to the preceeding
command.

The distro is Ubuntu Edgy.

Or just sudo -s
and you have a root prompt :-)

This gives the added advantage of being able to open GUI apps
as root without upsetting anything.
