No, this is very odd.  What you can see in the filesystem depends on who
you are but it should make no different as to what kernel you're running.

To get rid of the timeout and it automatically booting the default OS after
10 seconds of whatever, try this

- vi /boot/grub/menu.lst     or wherever you eventually found it

- press the down key until you're at the start of the line with timeout on
  it.  if the down key doesn't work, use the j button, should do the same
  thing but it depends on how your keyboard is configured whether down will
  work or not.

- hit i to insert characters at that point on the line i.e. the start

- type a single #

- hit escape to get back into command mode

- type wq and hit enter to save the file

- check the file you edited using something like 

  grep timeout /boot/grub/menu.lst

  you should see

  #timeout 10

  or something similar

- reboot and see what happens.

Phil'll be able to explain better than I could how to use vi.  I only know
the very basics, enough to do enough sysadmin so I can install an editor I
actually like.
