Geoff

I have never used it personally but Ubuntu comes with Ekiga Softphone installed.

More info here: http://ekiga.org/

I don't know if it's skype compatible, however there is an extensive FAQ on the web site.

My sincere thanks to Ciaran, Andy, Ian, Zeth, Alan, and Simon for all
the splendid info on Skype.
It looks like Ubuntu being the best bet - they are closest to Debian,
but don't shy away from anything "proprietary" !

Please can I ask one more question ?
What telephone instrument is preferred, and is the instrument itself
interchangeable between the brands ?
Would an ordinary microphone and headset be OK (in which case I would
need to "dial" using the keyboard) ?

It would be nice to see a FreeSkype or Openskype available.

Do these Skype service providers require registration or payment, or
for that matter do the "free" alternatives ?

I don't intend to rush this - at least we can now email the family !

See some of you soon.

Geoff.
