Good point, I should have said 

"Can you try running "hostname", and then "ping" the name it gives you
while you are not online. Do you get the long pause? Do you get unknown
host?"

Your hostname trying to be resolved via dns and not your static hosts
file is what i suspected too, which i why i metioned checking your
nsswitch.conf file. Or your hostname not having an address in your
static hosts file at all. 

(I'm assuming your not running your own dns server?)
