[SLUG] Installing Debian

Hi everyone,

I spent some time this weekend trying to install Debian from the discs Jamie gave me. I seem to have fallen at the first hurdle though as I'm unable to get it to start from the CD even!

The Bios is set to boot from a CD but this didn't work with the Mandrake install so I wasn't too bothered when Debian failed to start from the CD either. With Mandrake though, there where instructions on what to do in this eventuality. There is a file on the CD to copy to make a bootable floppy to start the install from the CD. I expected the same with the Debian discs, but can find nothing for someone already using Linux. There seems plenty of help if you are starting from M$. But the only help I found were instructions to look at the "Bootup HOWTO" which in turn tells me I should be looking at the "Installation HOWTO" which refers me back to the documentation from the distribution I'm installing. :(

All I want is the name of the file to copy to make the bootable floppy as I did with Mandrake.  With the Mandrake install it was cdrom.img and used;

dd if=/mnt/cdrom/images/cdrom.img of=/dev/fd0

to create the bootable floppy, but I can find nothing like this on the Debian discs.

Can anybody point me in the right direction please?

Al

So is this why Debian is regarded as a pain in the arse to install? ;)
