Ive looked through the man pages for TAR to find out how to zip all files
and directories sub-directories even if these directories are empty, i have
failed to find an answer.   Does anybody know how to zip up directories and
sub-directories even when they are empty?

i used the command "tar -czf ftp_backup_200303.tgz ftp"

it works great, i unzipped the contents in windows, great, no problems, then
i noticed that i had missing sub-directories, this is bad news.

Does anybody know how to zip up directories and sub-directories even when
they are empty?
