[SLUG] what people want from SLUG

Hallo everybody

I'm (a) a new member, (b) haven't paid a subscription (is there one?),
and (b) I don't live in Scarborough (being a Hebden Bridger).

So I'm not sure if I'll be able to get to (m)any meetings (I don't
drive). I do intend to come to *some* meetings, if at all possible, as
the social interaction is at least as important as the cyber one. That
said, here are my personal needs:

I'm a Mac user (of fifteen years standing) who has not (yet?) moved onto
OS X.

The main things I use my computer for are:

* DTP (mainly Quark, some PageMaker)

* Databases (FileMaker)

* Websites (BBEdit, and occassionally Claris HomePage)

* FTP (Fetch)

* Link checking (Big Brother)

* Graphics (Photoshop, Graphic Converter, Illustrator)

* Surfing (mainly Mozilla)

* Emails (Mozilla)

* Peer-to-peer downloading (LimeWire)

* Playing MP3s and MPEGs (various players)

* Burning CDs (Toast)

Other things I want to be able to do:

* Edit audio, eg. normalise, re-EQ, take out scratches, hiss, etc

* Edit video

When I am convinced that I can do all of the above on Linux, I will
ditch the Mac. (I don't need to be convinced that these things are
*possible", but that *I* can do them!)

During the process of getting to that position, I *know* I'm going to
have *loads* of questions, but I don't know what they are yet!!!

Any advice on these questions will be gratefully received.

Hopefully at some point, I will be able to help others too, when I've
learnt enough, and there are more newbies on the list.

Colm
