Hi y'all

OK, I've un tar'd my J2EE 1.3 files, now the installation instructions
ask me to add a few words to $HOME/.profile

wtf's that then?

If I were to guess, I'd say $HOME should be replaced by my home
directory. I'm logged in as root to do this installation. Seemed wise.
But I guess to run it, I'd be logged in as me. So maybe I should be
trying to edit the /.profile page in /home/me

How am I doing? OK so far?

Ah. Is this where slash dot comes from? As opposed to ./ which I
tripped over earlier? So what does it mean? It's not the sort of thing
I'll find in the man pages.

So, looking in /home/me, there's no 'profile' file. Is this because
there is, but ls doesn't show it because it's special?

Or will I have to create one? And if I have to create one, how? (I can
use the editors, but what extension, what permissions, what content?)

One day this will all be done :-)

J
