Cheers for the help guys...

I ended up editing my Xorg.conf file, removing the lines re. 
horizontal/vertical frequencies and I have since had no problems.

Currently waiting for my kernel to rebuild in the hope that I can get 
ntfs support enabled before dawn... eek.

If anyone knows how on earth I can get my logitech optical scroll wheel 
mouse's scroll wheel to work then I'll be impressed btw!

Oh, and why do ext2 file systems not need defragmenting like FAT/NTFS then?
