I can't help you with your NFS problem, but I copy files between my
machines using sftp or scp which comes as part of the ssh client package. Even
though my network is firewalled I prefer using encrypted communications
where I can.

All you need is an ssh server on the host machines. It's pretty easy to
setup, all you need is port 22 open.
