Biff was probably the first mail notifier and dates back to the beginning of
BSD.  It stuck in my mind as biff is the name of the dog of the author of biff
the program and is so named because the dog barked every time the postman
arrived at Berkeley Uni where Biff spent most of his life under a desk.  Or so
legend would have it.
