I notice it in Gedit 2.2.0, but also in Open Office I think. Open up
two text files. Copy some text from one, close the file, then try to
paste it into the other. On mine, it won't paste, you have to keep the
original file open.

Because it was pan-application, I got to thinking it was a Linux
thing, like they think it's more efficient not to actually bring the
highlighted text into memory but just to mark it in the 'from' file,
but if you close the file, the markings become meaningless. It feels
like a principle thing.
