errm, sorry about that. just looked at the docs for mysql - seems its
just 
the error log is a .err file. Do the log files for the J2EE server say
much 
? I would have thought if it couldn't connect the jdbc mysql driver
would 
throw an exception.

Coincidently I tend to throw an exception to jdbc (and JAVA in general),
must have been the applets that we had to do for a University
assignment, never again!
