I'm still  betting on the driver, under that version of Suse, for that 
brand of SBLive24bit, not doing the job properly.
I'm thinking that way because I had exactly the same symptoms with 
exactly the same sound card.  When I a) installed SBLive! (not 24bit) 
and b) manually installed the right driver, I got a very good result.
