:-) I knew I was being slack when I wrote it.

No, I don't think so. /home/John/rpms is where I intended the Real bin
to go .. there isn't an rpms directory elsewhere so I'm sure that's
right.

The file that did download went to /home/John/work/work/sli/downloads
so that's all within my home directory too (wrong, see below).

df reports:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 487M 412M 51M 90% /
/dev/sda1 99M 34M 60M 37% /boot
/dev/shm 1010M 0 1010M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda3 8.1G 4.3G 3.4G 57% /home
/dev/sda8 487M 11M 451M 3% /tmp
/dev/sda5 4.8G 1.9G 2.6G 43% /usr
/dev/sda7 965M 136M 780M 15% /var
/dev/sda9 7.8G 7.4G 37M 100% /home/John/work
/dev/sda10 7.8G 7.4G 55M 100% /home/John/audio
/dev/sda11 7.8G 778M 6.7G 11% /home/John/oldWork

so I've not actually filled my /home/John/work directory yet.

Aha. My assumptions were wrong. /home/John/work is a different
partition to /home which presumably contains /home/John/rpms.

What does that tell us? Clear out my work folder and see if it's a
space issue? It shouldn't be .. 5.7Mb could come down seven times in
the free space that's available. It's not taking ages to write because
of fragmentation is it? The download didn't show 'complete' for
minutes.

I think I forgot to attach the screenshot to my last message:
