[SLUG] CD/DVD drive icon disappeared

Thankyou Martin for remembering to ask about my PC's non-playing of CDs and
DVDs.
I tried re-tick and re-apply the boxes for CD and DVD drive - mounted and
unmounted options (whatever the difference means), from Behavior panel's
Device Icons tab, eventually reached by way of start menu's System, then
Configuration; KDE; LookNFeel; Behavior.
But if there is a working solution, the right permutation, of ticked CD and
DVD boxes, has eluded me. Ive left all options ticked.
(Re-starting the computer didnt help either.)

I did try a DVD that had worked in the past. The PC responds with a growl like
a sick dog. (Instead of what? helicopter rotor start-up whine of CD drives.)

Ive copied a CD onto a blank CD. The program K3b trumpeted when the copy was
finished, so the speaker is functioning.
I tried play the original and the copy with KsCD.
Altho it went thru the motions, there was no sound. (Only the copy, when run,
provoked a feedb error message.)
KsCD described the music track as "unknown".

Thanks again for trying to help.
