Hmm, most interesting. I wonder how long they'll be able to keep
it up at that price.

Bytemark's UML VMs can be found at:

	http://www.bytemark-hosting.co.uk/hosting/vms.php

Initially I thought of this as a cheaper compromise to paying for
a whole machine (before I was aware that they were available for
GBP29/month!), but actually there are some compelling benefits:

- When the hardware breaks, the hoster moves your VM to working
hardware before you're even aware that there's a problem.

- If you stuff the installation (e.g. disable sshd, replace the
kernel but forget to run lilo, etc.) you can still login to the
UML console and reinstall the machine without having to visit
the data centre, or having to pay the hoster to do it for you.

This said, Bytemark has been downright unlucky with the hardware
they purchased to ramp up to offering UML hosting as a standalone
service (i.e. not as part of delivering a consulting/
implementation/management solution); they have kept the
availability high, but reliability has been poor. They did offer
to suspend charging entirely until the problems had been sorted
out and two straight weeks without problems were successfully
completed.

Keeping an eye out for victim^H^H^H^H^H^H^H interested persons....

Ah, I see that you've "fixed" this now:

I take it that the order form that you filled out didn't explain
too clearly what its reverse-DNS question was about?

I expect to arrive in Sydney a few minutes before the April meeting
commences and will therefore miss it. I plan to be at the May
meeting though.
