There are a few detailed TeX books that are available online.

"References for TeX and friends"
"TeX by topic, a TeXnician's  reference"
"The not so short introduction to LaTex 2e"

I am also wrestling with LaTeX for a book of mine.  Perjaps we
have enough people to start a LaTeX sig, sclugtex ;-)
