What happens if you just run 'X' from a virtual terminal? You /should/ get
the standard X crosshatch pattern on the root window and a pointer.

Doing so won't attempt to start any kind of window manager or desktop
environment, so if it doesn't quit due to some error, you'll need to kill it
using CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (not delete!)
