Subject: General laptop buying tips

On the subject of laptops, If you're not planning on buying an IBM or a
mid-to-high end Toshiba, familiarise yourself with the model ranges of at
least the first four of the main Taiwanese ODMs:

http://www.clevo.com.tw
http://www.mitac-europe.com/home/products/
http://www.asus.com.tw/
http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/index.htm
http://www.gericom.com
http://www.uniwill.com/
http://www.twinhead.com/
http://www.inventec.com/index.htm
http://www.arima.com.tw/computer/indexpl.htm
http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/index.htm
http://www.gericom.com

Doing so, you'll be able to compare like-with-like by recognising the case
designs. See
<http://www.xtremenotebooks.com/index.php?section=include&include_type=name_brand>
for details of who rebadges which ODM's product.

Also, it can be worth looking in John Lewis; not only do they price match,
they also add an extra year's guarantee free-of-charge (applies to most
other white and brown goods too, but that's OT here). Sadly, they mainly
seem to sell Sony (lousy rep for customer service), Samsung and HP. Oh, and
Apple (which I would consider, but there are too many x86-only binaries I
want, plus I do have a requirement to run Windows on my laptop).

Best Regards,
Alex.
