Okay, ignore that paragraph, it's wrong.

- -T measures the speed that Linux can transfer data in and out of its own
buffer cache, and isn't useful in your case.

- -t measures the speed that the drive's hardware can push data over the
cable, and is the one you're looking for (but the figures will be more
accurate if you specify -T as well).

Apparently I've been using hdparm for years without noticing that a
transfer speed of 4GB/s is a bit unlikely. Ho hum...
