If you install Mandriva from the FREE (beer & speech) dvd instead of a 
One release you can select whichever desktop you like, LXDE is what 
Mandriva uses for netbooks which saves around 50mb RAM over Gnome.

This desktop Im at now is running Mandriva Gnome and using 230mb RAM at 
idle, the laptop uses around 185mb.

You can of course install with Gnome and then install task-lxde 
afterwards from the repositories and switch between the two to have the 
best of both worlds.
