Those things usually require nothing more than basic linear algebra. I'm
self-taught too, though, so I only know the parts I've figured out or
learned through reading.

There are lots of ways of contributing[1] to Debian[2] that doesn't
involve becoming a DD, although they are of course not as glamorous. I'm
starting with those myself, and am leaving NM for later. I think the NM
process seems nice, however, since it's so structured.
