[Bradford] Text not displaying in Raspberry pi desktop

I am on a little adventure, ultimately to set up a lan server on a pi. 
On my way I have managed to boot it with Raspbian  and am having some trouble 
with the fonts on the desktop.

Text displays normally enough in the initial boot console, but when it 
launches the desktop, it replaces the text with rectangles.

Any suggestions ?
