Buy a 1TB or possibly 2TB USB hard drive (WD Passport or similar) from
Curry’s. Format it to Ext2 (as you are only going to use it for
storage). rsync everything to the USB hard drive - this will take 24
hours if you have a revolving hard drive rather than an SSD. Reformat
your hard drive to Ext4 (for simplicity - other options are available).
rsync everything back to your hard drive. Total time: c. 2 days with a
revolving hard drive; c. 8 hours with an SSD.
If you have a separate /home partition, you could alternatively just
rsync the /home partition and do a fresh install of your favourite
distribution, creating a /home partition during the install and copying
everything back to that.
I have used the latter method when moving from one computer to a new
computer without any problems.
