It would seem that my best bet is:-
To get an SSD, at least 1TB.
Fit it internally along with the HDD.
Format it to ext4.
Set aside a couple of days to rsync it to match my current HDD.
Boot off a usb stick &
Make the SDD bootable.
Make the HDD non-bootable and possibly re-format it as a backup
Then re-boot off the SSD and have fast, new, system again!
