It's interesting what you say. 
Of course the raid card itself is a single point of failure. 

I have software raid already in the box this new server will be replacing. I
presumed that software raid would be slower?!?  

I was thinking about the adaptec 2420SA before your email.

Cheap RAID cards have serious drawbacks (imho). Better to go 
software raid, from a known (documented) config on a non-RAID
/boot & / partition, so if you lose not just a disk, but
the RAID card, you can be back up again easily.

If others have thoughts on this, I'd be interested to hear.
