Just in case you're interested, I needed to create 30 second clips from
mp3's and fade em in and out. Russ pointed me at mp3splt and I also used
SoX.
$ mp3splt nickelbacksucks.mp3 1.00 1.30
Gives a 30 sec clip from 1min to 1min 30sec
$ sox nickelbacksucks_1.00_1.30.mp3
nickelbacksucks_1.00_1.30withfadein.mp3 fade t 5 0 0
't' is a linear style fade in. There are other styles like logarithmic
and parabola. 5 is fade in length, next is point to start fade and the
last is fade out length.
$ sox nickelbacksucks_1.00_1.30fadein.mp3
nickelbacksucks_1.00_1.30fadeinandout.mp3 fade t 0 25 5
Fade starts at 25 seconds and fade out is 5 seconds long.

No, that's far too clever for my very-limited audio skills. You might
need a proper audio editor. I think Audacity reckons to be good, but
I've never needed/wanted to use one, so I have no real idea.
