Having never compiled a program and/or kernel from source I'm looking
forward to this (told you all I was a newbie). I would also be
interested in what I would be hoping to acheive / gain from "rolling my
own" so to say.

A few Sugestions for Subjects for the web How too's newbie section
How to obtain / install Open office on to Windows+Apple+Linux systems
How to connect Linux laptops/boxes to Abertay wireless network -
only useful for Abertay Staff & Students
    How to do linux wireless
How to connect to windows networks (samba) and printers
How to install Linux - Suggest standardising on one distribution at
first - possibly Mint if someone shows how to get grub to play nice with
windows partition.

How much server space would we be allowed, as this can greatly effect
the level of screen shots to accompany the hand holding. A picture can
say a thousand words.
