Now you have to agree that you've said very little in the way of whats happening.  The information i can get from this is;

Your using ubuntu (but we don't know what version i.e. 6.10, 7.04, 7.10)

Your being sent back to the loggin window.  But we don't know if there are any error messages.  I presume not but in troubleshooting it never pays to presume anything.

There could be many reason for this not working, we start with the simple but i kinda know that this isn't the fault.  

Password correct and user name, so let us know that thats right, and thats one thing to tick of the list so to speak.  

It may also be worth trying to loggin and when it fails, press alt + f2 (fou can use alt+ f2 all the way to alt + f6 but lets stay with alt +f2).  

You'll be presented with a command line login in.  Login with your details then type dmesg.  This will give us an idea of what happened.  

Have a look through the error messages and look for anything that refers X11, GDM, or anything else that stands out.

On a personal note blaming Ubuntu because something doesn't work isn't going to get you too far.  I run Ubuntu, and most of this list run's ubuntu in one way or another.  

Everyones more than willing to give you a hand, but it's like a car, telling us the key doesn't start the engine, fix it now.  

Try and be as detailed in your requests as possible, and use the rule of thumb, if i was sent this would i understand whats being asked of me?

I can also meet you sometime before the next meeting and have a look for you, it tends to be the case of two heads are better then one.

Any ways dude, i hoped that helps and i look forward to seeing your not response with regards to this and maybe between us all we can get you up and running, or Gordon can convert you to the ranks of fedora
