If you're installing Gentoo, when you go to download a stage tarball, use
the download marked i686 not x86 to make sure you get the right one (on some
mirrors x86 doesn't/didn't correspond to the tarball you'd expect it to,
saves you downloading it twice).

If you already have a linux install and want to install gentoo to a
different partition, you don't need a liveCD though. You just follow the
same instructions in the handbook from a command prompt, since pretty much
all you're doing is downloading stuff, extracting stuff, the chrooting into
your new environment. (That's assuming the current linux install is also
x86, not 64-bit, else chroot will fail).
