I had just was not keen on the network manager itself. i much prefer wicd
interface.
the latest version from there site ( not sure if its in repositories yet )
is a great improvement over previous version. My favorite feature being the
ability to run scripts when different AP connect and disconnect.  It also
manages wpa supplicant configuration too.

When my laptop connect to my home network. it logs in to my server and start
my virtual machine.
