...except for sound on an HP, of course. I suggest trying out the live CD and 
see if that fixes the sound problem: there is a live KDE and a live Gnome 
version. If the Gnome version works, the poster could try looking at the 
working config to see if it gives clues to his current Ubuntu problems.
