a throw away comment embedded in some forum suggests
"switching off Firefox's phishing verification (which runs fsync) has made a
noticeable difference in performance."

maybe futher looking into what apops use fsync and where.

as for the desktop. is it worth maybe looking at something like openbox
based on a  minimal instal eg something like chrunchbang linux
